A Legacy of Education, Service, and Development

Eastern Samar State University (ESSU) stands as a public higher education institution dedicated to advancing education, research, extension, and community development in Eastern Samar. Its history reflects the continuing commitment to make higher education accessible and responsive to the needs of the people of the province.

From State College to State University

A significant milestone in the institution’s history was the enactment of Republic Act No. 9312 on August 7, 2004. This law converted the Eastern Samar State College (ESSC) into a state university to be known as Eastern Samar State University (ESSU) and integrated the Maydolong National Agricultural School in the Municipality of Maydolong, Eastern Samar. The law designated Borongan as the main campus of the University.

This transformation marked an important chapter in the institution’s development, strengthening its role in providing higher education, professional and technological instruction, research, and extension services for Eastern Samar and the surrounding region.

Continuing the Legacy

From its beginnings as a state college to its establishment as a state university, ESSU continues to pursue its commitment to quality and relevant education. Its development represents the collective efforts of generations of administrators, faculty members, staff, students, alumni, government partners, and communities.

As the University moves forward, it remains committed to strengthening instruction, research, extension, innovation, and public service while preparing graduates to contribute meaningfully to local, regional, and national development.
