Eastern Samar State University took center stage today, August 10, 2026 as hosts of the regional simultaneous flag raising ceremony organized in partnership with the Commission on Higher Education Regional Office VIII (CHEDRO8) and participating colleges and universities across Eastern Visayas.

Gracing the occasion at the ESSU Main Campus were CHED Regional Office VIII Director, Dr. Maximo C. Aljibe and CHED Commissioner & ESSU BOR Chairman, Dr. Desiderio R. Apag III. Joining them were the ESSU community in full force, led by University President, Dr. Andres C. Pagatpatan, Jr. together with the Vice Presidents, Campus Administrators, Deans, Unit Heads, faculty members, non-teaching personnel, and students.

Gathered before the newly minted Felipe J. Abrigo Memorial Monument, the university community stood united in honoring the enduring spirit of regional partnership. University officials together with Dr. Apag and Dr. Aljibe, spearheaded the ceremonial hoisting of the ASEAN flags, symbolizing unity amid diversity and the collective aspirations of Southeast Asian nations.

In their respective messages, the two CHED officials underscored the continuing relevance of ASEAN as a regional alliance founded on cooperation, mutual understanding, shared development, and peaceβ€”values that resonate deeply with the Philippines as one of ASEAN’s founding member states.

Adding color and cultural vibrancy to the celebration, the College of Hospitality Management, through its BS Tourism students, presented an ASEAN-themed National Costume Fashion Show, showcasing the diverse cultural identities and traditions of Southeast Asia.

The celebration continued at the ESSU Central Library, where an exhibit featuring the rich and flavorful cuisine of ASEAN member states offered the university community a delectable journey across the region. More than a celebration, the occasion became a living expression of ASEAN unity, cultural diversity, and the power of higher education to build bridges across borders.
