Undergraduate Students Undergo Vital Training o Thesis and Capstone Writing

The office of the Student Research and Evaluation, headed by Dr. Joel R. Pangilinan, under the Student Services and Alumni Affairs (SSAA), headed by its Dean, Dr. Aris A. Lapada, successfully organized an Undergraduate Seminar on Thesis/Capstone Writing on Monday, April 14, 2025, at the Teatro Ibabawnon of the Main Campus.

Third-year students from across all colleges of the main campus who currently have thesis subjects in their curriculum were the beneficiaries of the said highly enriching thesis/research writing workshop provided by ESSU’s very own research experts.

Dr. Neil Francis B. Casillano of the College of Computer Studies opened the sessions with his “Thesis Writing 101: From Topic Selection to Defense," providing a concise but highly informative lecture on the entire academic paper writing journey. Dr. Lapada followed suit with an equally information-rich presentation about “Writing a Publishable Paper,” which was then followed by RDSO Director Dr. Delbert A. Dala’s “Ethics in Undergraduate Research: Avoiding Plagiarism and Promoting Integrity."

The said Undergraduate Research Seminar was also made possible in partnership with the Research Development Services Office (RDSO), which seeks to inculcate a culture of inquiry, critical thinking, and innovation in students by providing them with the tools and learning opportunities before they head into oral and poster presentations where they can engage in scholarly discussions, receive constructive feedback, and enhance their research and communication skills.

Furthermore, the activity offers the participants an opportunity to present their thesis topics and helps them frame their approach through their engagements with the resident experts and provides students from different fields a forum to share insights, collaborate, and explore research opportunities beyond their disciplines.

To cap off a hugely informative session, RDSO Assistant Director Dr. Riomar G. Obliopas treated the students to an exciting presentation on “Utilizing Digital Tools for Research: Mendeley, Google Scholar, and Beyond," offering the audience ultra-modern digital tools that make academic writing more technically sound and enjoyable while making sure that the authors stay on top of the entire writing process.
