The University’s Gender Awareness and Development (GAD) office through the College of Science (CS) gathered all the college’s students for a seminar on ‘Raising Awareness to Prevent Violence Against Women and Girls’ today, March 13, 2025 at the Canuctan Hall, Main Campus.
At the forefront of organizing the said event is CS GAD Focal, Asst. Prof. Rebecca A. Corre with the help of the entire CS leadership and faculty. CS Dean, Dr. Maria Natalia A. Ciasico welcomed the attendees with her opening remarks which was immediately followed by a lecture on what VAWC is all about, courtesy of Prof. Ethanie Irish A. Guilleno, Program Head of the BS Social Work.
Prof. Guilleno provided an informative talk on The Anti-Violence Against Women and Their Children (VAWC) Act of 2004, or Republic Act (R.A.) 9262 including the qualified definition of the violence against women and children as a public crime, legal remedies, the support services offered by the concerned government agencies, including counseling and temporary shelters as well as the duties of each citizen to report incidence and help stop such violence.
Also providing her understanding on the matter, CS Faculty Member, Ms. Regina Patricia Jamer-Bulan shed some much-needed light on Gender Awareness, encompassing the difference between sex and gender, gender identity and gender expression, as well as gender equality and gender inclusivity.
To wrap up the activity, College of Sciences’ For/EnP Edgar I. Peque provided the closing remarks by enjoining the students to be active agents of the campaign to end violence against women and children. With March being the anti-VAWC month, the University's GAD office emphasizes inclusivity, equality, and gender sensitivity to create a supportive academic environment, introducing students and faculty to its programs to foster personal and community development through a series of activities.
