College of Agriculture: At a Glance

The College of Agriculture at Eastern Samar State University (ESSU) - Main Campus is dedicated to advancing agricultural education, research, and community outreach. Nestled in Eastern Samar, the college plays a pivotal role in promoting sustainable agricultural practices and empowering students to be future leaders in the agricultural sector.

The College of Agriculture offers a range of undergraduate programs designed to equip students with comprehensive knowledge and practical skills in various agricultural disciplines. The undergraduate programs are completed in a four-year cycle of various major programs.

 

Undergraduate Programs

1. Bachelor of Science in Agriculture (BSAg)

 Majors 

  1. Agronomy

  3. Animal Science

   

CAg curriculum has core subjects in crop science, soil science, animal husbandry, and agricultural economics. It has hands-on training through fieldwork and laboratory exercises. To augment the learning exercise of the students, the curriculum embeds electives such as modern agricultural technologies and sustainable farming practices.

The College of Agriculture at ESSU - Main Campus is committed to advancing agricultural research and innovation. The college's research initiatives focus on addressing local and regional agricultural challenges, promoting sustainable practices, and improving productivity and profitability for farmers.

In its effort for sustainability, CAg has collaborative projects that engage partnerships with government agencies, non-governmental organizations, and private sector stakeholders. Likewise, CAg promotes community-based participatory activities to ensure the applicability and impact of learning outcomes.

Believing in the importance of participatory education, the college places a strong emphasis on extension services and community outreach, ensuring that the benefits of its academic and research activities reach local farmers and the wider community.

 

The following are the extension programs that the college has brainchild:

  • Training workshops and seminars for farmers on best agricultural practices.
  • Demonstration farms to showcase innovative farming techniques.
  • Support services for rural development and agribusiness ventures.
  • Initiatives to promote food security and nutrition in local communities.
  • Collaboration with local government units to support agricultural development plans.

 

The College of Agriculture is equipped with laboratories for soil analysis, plant pathology, and animal science. It also has modern equipment for molecular biology and biotechnology research. Alongside these resources, CAg has experimental farms that are dedicated for crop trials, livestock breeding, integrated farming systems, and greenhouses and nurseries for plant propagation and horticultural studies to support its academic and research endeavors.

Students at the College of Agriculture enjoy a supportive learning environment, with numerous opportunities for personal and professional growth.

Furthermore, the college supports student organizations to further enhance their engagement and practical learning and leadership experiences such as:

Admission and Retention Policy

General Requirements

 

To be eligible for admission to the College of Agriculture at Eastern Samar State University (ESSU) - Main Campus, applicants must meet the following general requirements:

 

  1. High School Graduates
  • Must have completed the K-12 Basic Education Curriculum or its equivalent.
  • Should have a high school diploma or equivalent certification.
  • Must have a satisfactory General Weighted Average (GWA) of 87% or higher

 

  1. Transfer Students
  • Must present a Certificate of Transfer Credentials or Honorable Dismissal from the previous institution.
  • Should have a minimum GWA of 2.0 or its equivalent.
  • Must submit official transcripts of records for evaluation.

 

  1. Returning Students
  • Should provide a letter of intent to return and any required documentation to justify the leave of absence.
  • Must meet the retention requirements applicable at the time of re-admission.

 

Specific Requirements

 

  1. Entrance Examination
  • All applicants must take and pass the ESSU College Admission Test (CAT) specific to the College of Agriculture.
  • Applicants may be required to undergo an interview with the college's admissions committee.
  • Applicants must submit a medical certificate from a licensed physician indicating fitness to undertake the course

 

Retention Policy

 

The College of Agriculture at ESSU Main-Campus has established a retention policy to ensure that students maintain satisfactory academic progress and remain eligible to continue their studies.

 

Academic Performance

 

  1. GPA Requirements
  • Students must maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5 in all major courses.
  • For general education courses, a minimum GPA of 2.75 is required.

 

Probationary Status

  • Students whose GPA falls below the required minimum will be placed on academic probation for one semester.
  • During the probationary period, students must improve their GPA to meet the required standard.
  • Failure to meet the GPA requirements after the probationary period may result in dismissal from the program.

 

Course Completion

Core Courses

  • Students must pass all core courses in the College of Agriculture.
  • Failure in any core course requires the student to retake and pass the course in the next semester it is offered. 

Prerequisites

  • Students must complete all prerequisite courses before advancing to higher-level courses. The inability to pass prerequisite courses may delay progression in the program.

 

Attendance and Conduct

  1. Class Attendance
  • Students are expected to attend all scheduled classes, laboratory sessions, and fieldwork.
  • Students shall not be allowed to attend classes after a lapse of 12% of regular class meetings. 
  • Time lost by late enrollment is considered lost by absence. 

Code of Conduct

  • Students must adhere to the ESSU Student Code of Conduct, which includes maintaining academic integrity, showing respect for faculty and peers, and upholding the values of the university.
  • Violations of the code of conduct may result in penalties ranging from warnings to expulsion, depending on the severity of the offense.
