College Goals

The aim of ESSU College of Law is not only to produce lawyers of excellent calibre but also to teach law in an excellent manner thereby be the institution that can address and meet the call for administration of justice of the province in particular and national in general. To this end, the College of Law pursues the following goals: 

  1. Prepare students for the practice of law through the provision of comprehensive knowledge and understanding of the various branches of law;
  2. Establish a strong research arm for studies in line with law, legislation, law enforcement and governance for use in instruction and extension purposes;
  3. Undertake extension programs and activities that address the needs of the local governments and private sector, especially the deprived and oppressed sectors of society;
  4. Establish linkages with government agencies and private organizations for the advancement of justice, law and order.

PROGRAM OUTCOMES

  1. To impart to the law students a broad knowledge of law and its various fields,

and of its legal institutions;

  1. To develop their ability to search for the law, to analyse, articulate and apply it effectively as well as to enable them to gain a total approach to legal problems and issues;
  2. To prepare students for advocacy, counselling and decision-making, and improve their ability to deal with recognized legal problems of the present as well as the anticipated problems of the future;
  3. To develop competence in the law students in a chosen field of law for gainful employment, or as a foundation for future training beyond the basic professional degree, and to develop in them the desire and capacity for continuing study and self-improvement.
  4. To inculcate in them the ethics and responsibilities of the legal profession; and
  5. To produce lawyers who pursue the lofty goals of their profession conscientiously and adhere to its ethical norms faithfully.

 

Admission and Retention Policy

 

ADMISSION AND RETENTION POLICY

(Effective starting SY 2022-2023)

  • Admission Policy

Incoming Freshmen

  1. The applicant must have at least a 2.5 General Weighted Average (GWA) in his or her grades earned in the pre-law baccalaureate degree. 
  2. The applicant must pass the ESSU-College of Law Admission Test where applicant must get at least 80%  rating. Subject content of the College of Law Admission test will include: Vocabulary, English Grammar, Comprehension, Mathematical Ability, Logical Analysis & Reasoning.  The College of Law Admission Test shall be prepared by the College Dean. 
  3. Passers of the Admission Test will undergo a one-on-one interview with the Dean or his/her designated official. 

Transferees 

  1. A transferee must have at least a GWA of 2.5 in the last semester attended in previous law school. However, is a transferee has one (1) failing grade in the last semester attended in previous law school (despite having a GWA of at least 2.5), such transferee shall automatically be on Probation status in his or her first semester at the ESSU College of Law.
  2. Transferees who have stopped schooling for three (3) successive years or longer will be required to start from the freshman level of the current ESSU College of Law curriculum.
  3. Those who are transferring but has stopped schooling for less than three (3) years must have their proper validation of their courses earned in previous law school, before the said subjects can be credited. 
  4. Transferees must have at least one year residency at the ESSU-College of Law.

 

Retention Policy

  1. During the first three years of law studies, a bonafide law student must maintain a General Weighted Average (GWA) of at least 2.5 every semester. 
  2. A student who earns a GWA below 2.5 shall be under Probation for one year. If during said probation, a student earns a GWA below the minimum required in a semester covered by the Probation year, he or she shall not be allowed to enroll further in the law program. 
  3. A student can avail of probation status only once.
  4. A student must enroll at least half of the regular load for the normal load per semester, except when he or she is already in the last year of studies and must earn remaining subjects to complete the law program; provided, however, that he or she must complete the ESSU law curriculum within a maximum of six years or 12 semesters.
  5. Law students who have stopped law studies for four (4) consecutive years or more shall be required to re-enroll all courses of the prevailing law curriculum (back-to-zero).
